Hawks 4 Sharks 2: Little Joe

The playoffs are a like a great game of chess. Each move is countered with another move.

In the first game the second line had chances but couldn't bury them. In the second game, the second line got buried.

Not because they didn't try, but because, well to be honest, the Hawks are the better team.

In the post-lockout NHL a defensive corps is key to winning. And I love Blake, but he and Murray are not Keith and Seabrook. To be blunt, Campbell would have been our top defenseman and he's Chicago's #3 guy.

Yes Nabby played not-so-great, but you are not going to win many games scoring 1 or 2 goals a game.

I have hope, that the Sharks will let me see them one last time, but not too much hope.

Sharks 2 Wings 1: Choke collar removed

The reason you become a fan of a team is because of games like this.

We may not win the cup, but it felt good, very good to win this one.

After the collapse against Dallas three years ago, and then the collapse against Anaheim last year... this blogger was convinced we were looking at YAC -- yet another choke.

When we lost game 1, and then played like crap in game 2, I was convinced it was over.

But somehow, somewhere, Little Joe became the Big Pavelski, giving Tiny Joe the chance to become Jumbo Joe once more.

And Patrick Marleau, the guy who couldn't score in the playoffs for three years, finally started to do what he does best which is find spots and put the puck in the damn net.

And when the game was 2-1 with 13 minutes to go, you knew that everything that Detroit had an didn't have would be thrown at the Sharks. And when Boyle went out with 52 seconds, I had this feeling of deja-vu all over again. 

But the team didn't let Detroit get a single shot on net. And it was over.

And the fans didn't get up and leave. And when Nabby tried to speak there was at least 5 minutes of cheering. And Nabby looked bemused like Russians do at how Americans get too happy and too sad at the same time...

Sharks 4 Wings 3: Finally a win at home

The Sharks won the first game of a playoff round for the first time since 2007. As a Shark fan this puts me in the curious position of not worrying about inevitable 2-0 hole going to the opposing team's rink.

Now it's easy to look at this win and thing, well we won. But the reality is that we if we couldn't beat a tired and disoriented Detroit team, we didn't deserve to make it to round 3. Detroit had flown in late, got fined, and had played one more game than the Sharks. In that context, this was the one gimme of the series.

The Red Wings were going to show up flat. And they did. The scored three goals before the Wings even realized that the series had begun.

I expect tomorrow's game to become much more interesting.

Sharks 8 Preds 5: Six goals in the third

So the game began with the Sharks being hopelessly outplayed by the Predators. It was painful.

The Preds took a 4-2 lead, had outshot the Sharks 200-1, okay it was 35-11. 

I was trying to decide whether I should leave the Pavilion, and then all of the sudden the Sharks decided to show who is boss.

They scored 6 goals in the third period. The highlight goal was by Pavelski. After the goal the entire stadium chanted: USA, USA, USA!

I went to the hockey game the other day as a Montreal Canadiens fan.

And it was an illustrative and informative experience. First off San Jose Sharks fans can be rude and obnoxious. Montreal fans are congenital whiners.

And if Joe had never left Boston, it's unclear if San Jose would be a team that was a pretender to the Cup.

Sharks 2 Blue Jackets 1: Does every goalie have to have a great game here?

After the one game where I was a Habs fan, I am back to being a Sharks fan. And that is so much more satisfying. Also safer. Some jackass decided to toss peanuts at me when the Habs vs Sharks game ended.

Watching the Sharks, I am reminded how San Jose's destiny changed with the Thornton trade. Without Thornton, it's unclear if we're that great a team.

As for the Heatly trade, I wonder. We lost a lot of depth to get Heatly. We lost Mihalek and Ehrhoff. I know I've said mean things about Ehrhoff, but right now he would be very very useful. And he's been playing a lot better so who knows. C'est la vie.

And what is it with goalies who play well at the Pavilion? I am delighted I got to see the decade's greatest save live, but really, did it have to be Kipper and not Nabby? And like, what was Price doing two days ago? And finally, Mason has to re-discover the magic YESTERDAY?

Sat April 25 at the Pavilion Game 5: Sharks 3 Ducks 2 OT

Finally a playoff win with me in attendance. I never thought I would have to wait this long (game 5).

Sharks survive to try another day. Today was the best game I have ever seen Joe Thorton play in the playoffs. With everything on the line he was dominant. He scored, created the winning goal in OT and assisted on Seto's goal. If Joe chooses to play like that for the rest of the playoffs, I am no longer worried about our chances.

On the other hand, Nabby continues to be a source of worry. My father in-law who saw the game on tv said that Nabby did not look as bad as he did at the Pavilion.

Sharks beat the Ducks.

After yesterday's embarrassing performance, I was sorely tempted to not watch Los Tribunes get their ass handed to them in Anaheim. To be honest, wasn't clear the Sharks had an ass.

So I tuned in, and noticed Patty was still not playing. Okay, fine, so Todd's decided we don't really need this one. And then I noticed that Boucher in nets. Ah, this was a gimme.

Maybe not. Showing signs of life, the Sharks were able to, after the first 5 minutes, neutralize Getzlaf completely. Shutting down Getzlaf, shut down the Ducks, and the rest as the say is history.

At the end of the game there was a bit of scrum. It all started when the Ducks got a 6-5 situation and the Sharks were unable to make a line change. With about 15 seconds left, Vlasic tried to get a delay of game penalty by flopping on the puck. Getzlaf noticing that infraction going uncalled, escalated with a few wacks to the head with a stick on the prone Vlasic. That was then followed by a mugging of Perry by Boucher, who then wanted to get into a fight with Boucher (or the other way around, not clear).

Net net, Duck still suck. Let's go Sharks!

Was looking forward to this game. Boy did the Sharks suck. Marleau is such a key component of this team it's not even funny.
