Sharks 4 Wings 3: Finally a win at home

The Sharks won the first game of a playoff round for the first time since 2007. As a Shark fan this puts me in the curious position of not worrying about inevitable 2-0 hole going to the opposing team's rink.

Now it's easy to look at this win and thing, well we won. But the reality is that we if we couldn't beat a tired and disoriented Detroit team, we didn't deserve to make it to round 3. Detroit had flown in late, got fined, and had played one more game than the Sharks. In that context, this was the one gimme of the series.

The Red Wings were going to show up flat. And they did. The scored three goals before the Wings even realized that the series had begun.

I expect tomorrow's game to become much more interesting.

The Big Pavelski and Tiny Joe

There is this whole theory about little Joe. That he grew a lot because of last years playoffs etc.

You know, that's crap.

It was the goal he missed in the Gold Medal Game. He had the gold medal on his stick, and then the next shot by Canada is by Crosby and the game ends. 

He looked like his mother died. The feeling of shock and despair was there. And then in the first face off of the first game, and he drops on the puck rather than lose possession. And you knew this guy wasn't going to leave anything on the ice.

I believe he swore after that game he wasn't ever going to feel like that ever again.

And so now his counter part, Jumbo Joe was a disaster. Again he was disinterested, embarrassed by the faster Colorado Avalanche, and unable to do anything.

We had this whole Jumbo Joe and Little Joe, I think we now have a new pair, The Big Pavelski and Tiny Joe. ...

Sharks 3 Habs 2: Damn it Todd, let the Habs win...

I went to the hockey game the other day as a Montreal Canadiens fan.

And it was an illustrative and informative experience. First off San Jose Sharks fans can be rude and obnoxious. Montreal fans are congenital whiners.

And if Joe had never left Boston, it's unclear if San Jose would be a team that was a pretender to the Cup.

Sharks 2 Blue Jackets 1: Does every goalie have to have a great game here?

After the one game where I was a Habs fan, I am back to being a Sharks fan. And that is so much more satisfying. Also safer. Some jackass decided to toss peanuts at me when the Habs vs Sharks game ended.

Watching the Sharks, I am reminded how San Jose's destiny changed with the Thornton trade. Without Thornton, it's unclear if we're that great a team.

As for the Heatly trade, I wonder. We lost a lot of depth to get Heatly. We lost Mihalek and Ehrhoff. I know I've said mean things about Ehrhoff, but right now he would be very very useful. And he's been playing a lot better so who knows. C'est la vie.

And what is it with goalies who play well at the Pavilion? I am delighted I got to see the decade's greatest save live, but really, did it have to be Kipper and not Nabby? And like, what was Price doing two days ago? And finally, Mason has to re-discover the magic YESTERDAY?

Sharks beat the Ducks.

After yesterday's embarrassing performance, I was sorely tempted to not watch Los Tribunes get their ass handed to them in Anaheim. To be honest, wasn't clear the Sharks had an ass.

So I tuned in, and noticed Patty was still not playing. Okay, fine, so Todd's decided we don't really need this one. And then I noticed that Boucher in nets. Ah, this was a gimme.

Maybe not. Showing signs of life, the Sharks were able to, after the first 5 minutes, neutralize Getzlaf completely. Shutting down Getzlaf, shut down the Ducks, and the rest as the say is history.

At the end of the game there was a bit of scrum. It all started when the Ducks got a 6-5 situation and the Sharks were unable to make a line change. With about 15 seconds left, Vlasic tried to get a delay of game penalty by flopping on the puck. Getzlaf noticing that infraction going uncalled, escalated with a few wacks to the head with a stick on the prone Vlasic. That was then followed by a mugging of Perry by Boucher, who then wanted to get into a fight with Boucher (or the other way around, not clear).

Net net, Duck still suck. Let's go Sharks!
